Appraisal
Today… I performed an appraisal of the following instrument: a master violin modeled after the Guarneri Del Gesu and labeled Vila Kuzel in Brno Anno 1969. Above the label is the branded stamp: VILA KUZEL BRNO. The violin has a two piece front of Sumava spruce with medium annual rings of increasing density towards the corners. The back is a two piece medium streaked Balkan maples with the Charles Bridge and Prague’s Hradcany Castle impression. The ribs and neck are made of the same material. The purfling is relatively narrow and is made of three strips: ebony-maple-ebony of precise
execution of the tips facing the centre of the corners. The violin has a light golden-brown varnish. Pegs, nut, fingerboard, saddle, and the end-button (garniture) are made of ebony. Furthermore, the violin has a Thomastic tail piece and an over-the-tail-piece type of a chinrest that is made of plum wood and holds the branded stamp VILA KUZEL BRNO. The same stamp is also on the bridge and ebony mute.
The instrument is in excellent original condition.
Measurements of the instrument:
Length of back 35. 6 cm
Height of ribs 30 mm
Width upper bout 17 cm
Width centre bout 11. 3 cm
Width lower bout 20. 9 cm
Dimension 13 cm a 19. 5 cm
This master violin is work of my father Vilem Kuzel senior. I appraised this instrument at 120, 000. 00 Kc, that is, one hundred and twenty thousand Kc [Czech Republic koruna].
A photograph of the above instrument is enclosed.
